盟军一队由4艘CVE和CVL组成的袭扰小分队在大量DD的护卫下在12月靠近日军的南洋防线，侦察各地的防御强度，并企图伺机轰炸日军重要的油料港口——巨港，但是，由于日军防卫严密，盟军舰队没有找到漏洞可钻，只能悻悻然返航会科伦坡。
g2 Q, f& Q. j: z9 ~. w不料，日军也早已发觉这支舰队的存在，并且不断对其的行踪进行追踪，在注意到盟军舰队返航的路径靠近日军基地sabang后，日军驻守南洋的分舰队果断全速出击！同时卧薪尝胆苦练技能的陆军陆攻机队也做好了出击准备。
: v2 `. X) [ G" l4 k' l3 c% O1 y s盟军舰队没想到在印度洋上会遭遇到日军舰队的偷袭，慢速的CVE编队遭受了措手不及的打击，虽然日军舰队相对盟军舰队优势并不明显，仅仅多一条加古号老式CA，但是胜在打有准备之仗，一轮猛轰，成功击沉盟军舰队中的英国CVE酋长号HMS Rajah，同时击伤竞技者号和长岛号，重创另一艘英国CVE活跃号HMS Activity。此外，还击伤大量盟军DD，自身损伤轻微。/ Z# A$ S; u9 J% m: x
