当日夜间，Z舰队对古晋登陆场的金刚榛名舰队发动了奇袭，双方一共交战两次，依照夜战惯例，日军巡洋舰和驱逐舰发射了密集的鱼雷海，亲王和反击奇迹般幸存下来，分别和金刚、榛名捉对厮杀。原本有着日军炮击射术第一美誉的金刚编队此次大失水准，两轮战斗中被亲王反击狠狠教训了一通，金刚在首轮接战中即被命中14寸炮4发而重创起火，第二轮接战时更悲惨地沦为亲王的活靶，被命中10余次之多，天亮后在古晋外海沉没。榛名同样落于下风，其14寸炮仅1次命中反击且未能穿透装甲，反击号战斗结束时连火都没起，其15寸炮命中榛名共计6发，将其击为重创。幸好失速不大，天亮时仍能逃到250海里以外，估计仍有20节左右的航速。护卫舰的战斗呈现一边倒的态势，日军的5CA1CL把盟军的1CA2CL打得无力还手，半数被击沉或重创，余者皆带伤起火，Z舰队经此一役丧失了一半以上的实力，正退往巨港方向。
