0 F F+ \- s; ]2 l" R- N8 i自8月29日盟军58偷袭瓜岛，重创一只日军水面舰队后，KB连夜南下追赶58，至9月1日，已追赶到瓜岛以南约200海里处。58因为大黄蜂号一直没有到岗，不敢硬拼，一直退却到今日。加入大黄蜂的58以4CV+1CVE，载机400余架的堂皇之阵北上，其中战斗机野猫200架，攻击机200架。估计KB的载机在250架左右，其中零战约100架。盟军认为此时具有一定优势，决定大胆突击。为了充分保护58生存，决定150架野猫CAP，只放出50架海军陆战队野猫进行护航。
